Bringing the past back to life has paid off for Redrow – its restoration of treasured buildings in Horwich, Lancashire, has won a second award.

Arcon Village began life as an 18th century bleach works and now enjoys Grade II listed status. The old buildings have been revitalised into wonderful bespoke stone-built homes, complemented by sympathetically designed new-build properties.

And in recognition of Redrow’s loving restoration of the area, Arcon Village was named Best Conversion in the Northern Designs Awards, organised by Concept for Living.

Christine Aitken, sales director for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), commented: “We worked with archaeologists to maintain the industrial charm of the site and at the same time produce an accurate historical record of the original buildings. We’re delighted that our endeavours to preserve the historic buildings at Arcon Village have been recognised once again.”

It is the second major award for the development, which was named best residential conversation category in the LABC North West regional Building Excellence in 2009.

Arcon Village now comprises 140 homes, including one and two-bedroom apartments, townhouses, bungalows and mews style cottages, in a mix of two, three and four-bedroom designs.

“In general the stone used throughout the original building complex is yellow sandstone, while the roofing material is blue grey slate. We have stayed as true as possible to the existing architecture, using reclaimed materials and faithful replicas in the restoration,” Christine explained.

Modern additions with no historical interest were demolished, while original features have been maintained and enhanced.

The result is a stunning collection of converted properties with features such as exposed beams, galleried living areas, interesting windows – including large semi-circular arched windows that flood parts of the buildings with light – fantastic skylights, and authentic stone quoins and sills.

“The homes at Arcon Village offer the charm and character of older properties, but without the need to invest time and money on expensive repairs, renovations and running costs. It’s a combination that’s proved popular with purchasers and we’re now fast approaching the end of the development with just 10 homes remaining,” Christine commented.

“And to celebrate the award-win we’ve reduced the price of selected properties. For example there’s the opportunity to save up to £15,000 off a three-bedroom cottage, with prices now from just £195,000.”
