Escape the winter blues this Christmas in festive Quito

6th December 2010 Print

As the winter weather gets its grip on the UK, those looking to escape to somewhere with endless possibilities, should consider Quito for a festive Christmas break.

Quito, the first city to be declared by UNESCO as a 'World Heritage Site' is the second highest capital city in the world nestled between the Andean Mountains and at the foothill of the Pichincha Volcano.

The historical centre has over 130 historical monuments including over 80 churches and monasteries with Quito old town being the largest and most beautiful colonial centre in the Americas. Its beauty has inspired many artistes throughout the centuries which is why Quito has also been named Latin America's City of Culture 2011 and has something to appeal for everyone.

The hill top that overlooks the old town will be a focal point for some of the yuletide celebrations, with a display of twenty metallic structures depicting scenes from the nativity draped in 6000 lights, which is set against Quito's permanent winged structure - the Virgin Mary.

Spanish colonial architecture, colourful market squares, a vibrant nightlife make Quito a 'must do trip' for those looking to experience Christmas in Latin America. Apart from the historical centre of the capital, Quito's local suburbs also make for an interesting trip such as the bohemian area of Guspulo, the art of Bellavista or enjoying the open air and games to be found at La Carolina.

There is also a host of excursions from the city - all within easy reach including the Valley of the Volcanoes with many of the mountains snow-capped; Cotopaxi - the highest active volcano in the world; experience the thrill of standing on the equator; hike in the Andes; visit South America's largest Indian market which is great for Christmas shopping at Otavalo or visit the Mindo Cloud Forest, for breathtaking scenery and a vast array of birdlife.

From Quito, the opportunity exists to explore other highlights in Ecuador including the thrill of adventure in the Amazon or following in the footsteps of Darwin with a trip to the Galapagos. Whatever people choose, the variety of things on offer from Quito, make it a Christmas break to remember!
