Taste of the Tropics

In line with its fine dining ethos, The Elandra, north Queensland, will host in 2011 the incredibly popular 'Taste of the Tropics’ food and cooking experience, featuring Australia's most recognized practitioners of high cuisine - chefs Alastair McLeod, Manu Fieldel, and Miguel Maestres.

This series of innovative and exclusive food and wine events will include:

Alastair McLeod - 16th March 2011 to 20th March 2011
Alastair's a dinky-di Australian (his mother was born and grew up in North Queensland) and despite the Irish accent, he knows more about Australian produce than most. Alastair loves nothing better than the opportunities to meet Queensland's farmers, fishermen and manufacturers, hear their stories, and be inspired by them...then create dishes from their amazing produce.

Alastair is executive chef at Brisbane's iconic Bretts Wharf and co-owner and executive chef of Tank Restaurant and Bar - and that is where you will find him most days - in the kitchen of either (or both!) of the restaurants ensuring the reputation he has built with his team for quality food and service is always achieved.

Alastair also loves the opportunity his regular appearances on television programs such as Off The Eaten Track and Queensland Weekender provide and his contributions to magazines and newspapers, to share his passion and knowledge about the wonderful fresh produce that we have available to us on our doorstep.

Alastair's past career includes tenures as chef at a number of Michelin listed restaurants in Europe. These include Roscoff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Da Giovanni restaurant in Torino, Italy. Alastair also worked at one of Scotland's finest restaurants the Ubiquitous Chip in Glasgow, Scotland and La Fregate in Collioure, France.

Manu Fieldel - 6th April 2011 to 10th April 2011
Working with some of this country's finest, Manu has received Chef's hats in Hugo's at Sydney's famous Bondi Beach, Restaurant VII with its exciting fusion of French and Japanese cuisine and Bilsons at the Radisson Hotel.

At Bilsons within its second year of opening, the restaurant won 2 Chef's Hats, and in its third year, this accolade had increased to 3 Chef's Hats. In 2008 Bilsons won three chefs hats for the third year running.

Manu has had a successful first year at L'etoile with his first Chef's Hat awarded in August, and winning the "Shoot the Chef" competition for the Sydney Good Food Month.

First appearing on Australia television with TEN's Ready Steady Cook and was a regular presenter on 9am with David & Kim for two years. In 2010 Manu continues his success as a chef on TV. The beginning of the year saw Manu as co-host and expert judge on Seven's My Kitchen Rules which was a huge role on prime time television. He is now working with Seven as a Network talent on several projects including series 2 of MKR, and is excited about the new home cooks he will judge this time around.

Miguel Maestres - 18th May 2011 to 22nd May 2011
Miguel began to develop his role in the media, with his first series of Boys Weekend, alongside friends Gary Mehigan, Manu Feildel and Adrian Richardson. The show has aired in over 100 countries worldwide and as well as on Network Ten in December 2009 on Sunday nights. His own series, Miguel's Tropical Kitchen, aired on Lifestyle Food Channel and around the world in late 2009.

Miguel has appeared on Channel Ten's ‘The Circle’, ‘Today Show’ and ‘9am with David & Kim’, Channel Seven's ‘Sunrise’, ‘Morning Show’ and ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ and cooking spots on MixFM in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Miguel's passion for food and life is infectious, and he has developed a talent for incorporating Spanish ingredients and cooking styles into his modern Australian menus. This is one Chef to watch, and at the same age as Jamie Oliver when he first hit our screens, he is sure to be gracing our televisions more often in the future.
