‘Letters of Love’ workshops for Valentine’s Day

10th February 2011 Print

With almost 60% of women and 50% of men citing that receiving a Valentine’s card is ‘very important’  to them, John Lewis has launched a ‘Letters of Love’ workshop in store, helping hapless Romeos create the perfect love letter for their partner this Valentine’s Day.

The free workshop is hosted by Clare Northwood, John Lewis stationery buyer and international best-selling authors Katie Fforde and Sue Moorcroft from the Romantic Novelists’ Association.

The expert team will cover all elements of romance, from choosing and writing a meaningful Valentine’s card, to drafting the perfect proposal, with luxury stationery and handwriting tips.   Customers will be shown how to find the perfect card, before a masterclass on how to write words guaranteed to melt any heart.  Incurable romantics will go home with newfound confidence, that will be certain to impress their Valentine this year.

Katie and Sue, are experts on love, having written over 40 romantic titles between them. They say, “Love letters are a fantastic way to show your Valentine what they mean to you, but in recent years have become a dying art.  Even popular fiction characters such as Big from Sex And The City emailed his love letters to Carrie, rather than hand wrote them.  We’re thrilled to be working with John Lewis to revive this art and will be listening out for wedding bells.”

Clare Northwood, Stationery buyer at John Lewis said, “We are looking forward to helping our customers celebrate Valentine’s Day this year with a very special card or letter. Writing a beautiful letter is not just about the content, but also everything from the handwriting, to the envelope.  Our range of Valentine’s stationery provides an impressive start - now all you have to do is add the words to say what you really feel.”

The ‘Letters of Love’ workshop will be taking place in Peter Jones on 11th February 2011, providing those who need it with everything they need to write the perfect love letter before the big day.

‘Top Five Tips’ to writing the perfect Love Letter:

1. As in any kind of writing, it pays to consider your 'audience'. Think about your love (or intended love) and whether they'd appreciate wry humour or passionate intensity - and let this set the tone for your letter.

2. The aim is to connect exclusively with that person so don't make your copy so general that you could send to somebody different, next year.

3. Ensure that you use a good quality pen and paper or card.  Remember that this is a letter you would like your loved one to keep, so make sure your handwriting is legible and easy to read - you want to be any ambiguity about what you are trying to say.
4. Pay the person in question a compliment, with something that you admire about them.  English women love comments on their eyes, skin or legs, whereas men would prefer you to talk about their sense of humour.

5. Choose a card or writing paper that’s appropriate to the sentiments you want to express.  A funny card might work well with a witty poem, but might you might want to consider something more formal for a more passionate plea or proposal.
