Near record entry for Croft Circuit’s first race event of 2011

A staggering 180 riders will contest Croft Circuit’s first motor sport event of 2011 this coming weekend (9-10 April) – the opening rounds of the North East Motorcycle Racing Club’s race championships.
What is a near-record entry for an NEMCRC event in the club’s 49-year history will include overseas competitors from as far afield as San Francisco and Holland. Others from Ireland and the Isle of Man will also be heading over the water to Croft, just outside Darlington, for what is the first major motor cycle race event of the year for the North East and Scotland.
The action-packed event includes no less than 29 races over the two days for a wide variety of categories ranging from iconic pre-72 Classics to contemporary machinery capable of nudging the 180mph mark along Croft’s challenging straights.
Furthermore, a number of top names from several categories that are part of the high-profile MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship package will also be starring – giving fans a chance to see some of their heroes in action before the BSB visits Croft in mid-May.
Tickets cost just £12 per adult and, as with all race events at Croft this year, admission for children aged 15 and under is FREE. More details are available by calling the Croft Circuit on 01325 721815 or visiting the croftcircuit.co.uk website.
Croft Circuit Manager Tracey Morley said: “We’re very excited about the weekend ahead – with the exception of two excellent car rallies, since the end of our 2010 season the North East has had very little motor sport to enjoy. Our NEMCRC event therefore marks the start of the region’s 2011 racing calendar and we’re very proud to be kicking it off with a near-record entry which will mean capacity grids and terrific entertainment for the public.”
Meanwhile, donations from members of the recently-formed Croft Supporters Club have made it possible for the circuit to put several improvements in place to some of its spectator facilities.
Morley added: “A percentage of members’ subscription fees goes towards the upkeep of the venue and means they effectively own a little part of it! With their support we’ve been able to make small but important improvements to several public viewing areas. In fact, our circuit has never looked in better shape and, with our free-for-children pricing policy, we can’t think of a better value-for-money day out for families than an action-packed race day at Croft.”
The NEMCRC event marks the beginning of Croft’s big 2011 race calendar that features the very best in two and four-wheeled motor sport. Eleven meetings are so far on the agenda including Croft’s ‘Big Three’, namely the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship (13-15 May), Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (18-19 June) and the circuit’s very own Nostalgia Weekend (6-7 August) – a two-day festival of the very best in historic motor sport which also invites the public to attend in period costume from the Forties through to the Seventies.
