iPhone 4 claims top spot as nation's favourite handset

After a struggle to stay in the nation's top five over the past few months, Apple's iPhone 4 has soared two places to rob HTC of the number one spot for the favourite mobile phone this April, according to the latest tracker from independent price comparison and switching service, uSwitch.com.

The uSwitch.com Mobile Tracker, which ranks the most popular handsets based on live searches and sales, also shows that HTC has the most handsets in the top ten with the Desire HD and original Desire in second and third place. Meanwhile, Android has grown from dominating 50% of the charts to 70%, strengthening Google's stance against Apple's iOS even further.

This month also sees two Nokia phones  drop out of the Top 10, and a new entrant in the form of the Android-powered Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc, which has taken the place of last month's Motorola FLIPOUT.

Number one handset for April 2011 - Apple's iPhone 4 has climbed up two places since last month's tracker, giving it its first month occupying the top spot. This matches Apple's blockbuster earnings call, showing profits up 95% to £3.7bn in the second quarter and over 18m iPhones sold.

Biggest climber - The Samsung Galaxy S II has climbed a remarkable six places from March's mobile tracker, rising from the bottom of the table to fourth place. What makes it even more remarkable is that this position is based on pre-orders alone thanks to the overwhelming buzz for the handset. The smartphone will only see a full release on the 1st of May, with Phones4U stealing an exclusive April 27th launch date.

Biggest faller - The Blackberry Torch has continued its descent down the mobile phone tracker this month, falling three places, compounding a bad month for RIM, as the Blackberry Curve also drops a place.

Ernest Doku, technology expert at uSwitch.com, comments: "HTC may still be dominating the top ten, but the fact that iPhone has risen to number one for the first time will take some of the gloss off. And although the old favourites Apple and HTC are still the front runners, the battle for other spots in the top ten is on. The buzz around the Samsung Galaxy SII has been enough to push it up to 4th in the list based on just pre-orders - it's not launched nationwide until 1st May.

"The biggest winners though are consumers. As the handsets do battle, prices of deals are being driven down. Even those who want smartphone functionality but are keen to keep an eye on the pennies will be happy."
