Nutritionist voices concerns over diabetes ‘wonder cure’
A leading nutritionist has warned a new ‘wonder cure’ for diabetes that has seen participants managing on a diet of just 600 calories a day, may be sending out the wrong message about crash dieting.
The study, undertaken by researchers at Newcastle University and funded by Diabetes UK, suggests that a strict low calorie diet may help reverse the symptoms of those newly diagnosed with the condition.
The 11 participants in the study followed an eight-week diet of just 600 calories a day. Researchers reported that on the diet, fat levels reduced in the pancreas and liver, which helped insulin production return to normal.
However the research has been criticised by experts, who say it may be sending out the wrong message about crash dieting.
Slimavite nutritionist Melanie Bibby, says: “Losing weight very rapidly and through starvation may be a quick fix, but it is not a long term solution. It is very likely the weight will go straight back on when ‘normal’ eating is resumed, and the symptoms will return. The key to staying healthy is in maintaining a healthy weight and the best way to do this is by gradually developing healthy lifestyle and eating habits for life.
“While it is great to see research that backs the benefit of losing weight for those with Type 2 diabetes, this is nothing new and something we have always said. A healthy eating plan based on Low GI foods which help keep you feeling fuller for longer and can also help regulate blood sugar levels, is one of the most effective ways to do this.”
