Fast-growing waste management and clearance specialist Junk-It (Scotland) does its bit for the environment by recycling at every opportunity – so the clean, ‘green’ credentials of its latest 3.5-tonne Fuso Canter made it a particularly welcome addition to the company’s fleet.

The new Canter 3C13 is powered by a 130hp, 3.0-litre engine that not only meets Euro 5 emissions limits but also the more stringent – and voluntary – Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle (EEV) standard.

It was supplied by Mercedes-Benz dealer Western Commercial – the German manufacturer’s UK dealers are also responsible for sales and support of the robustly reliable Japanese light truck range – and is fitted with a high-sided alloy tipping body by Lothian Vehicle Bodybuilders, of Bathgate.

The Canter is operating from the depot which Junk-It opened recently at Edinburgh Ocean Terminal – a second, identical vehicle is due to enter service at the same location shortly.

Junk-It also runs a quartet of Euro 4 Canter tippers from its headquarters site in Glasgow. These, though, are all on 3350mm wheelbases, as compared to the 2500mm length of the latest arrival, and additionally equipped with large storage boxes mounted immediately behind the cabs.

Director Ross Martin, who co-founded Junk-It (Scotland) with his business partner David Malcolm in 2006, explained: “We’ve gone for the shorter wheelbase this time because Edinburgh is particularly tight for parking, so the extra manoeuvrability is making life a lot easier for our operatives.

“We’ve lost the big tool store, of course, but to be honest we’ve found that we don’t really need it. So the specification of our new vehicle will be the template for those that follow.”

Junk-It has operated Canters from ‘day one’ and funds each acquisition through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services.

The company specialises in home and office clearances throughout central Scotland. Highly professional and fully insured, its uniformed teams do all the heavy lifting and loading, with customers being charged according to the space their items take up on the back of the truck – the body’s 12 cubic yard capacity is equivalent to that of two domestic skips.

Junk-It provides a same day service, turning up within pre-agreed two-hour time ‘windows’, and recycles more than 70 per cent of the junk it collects, donating many items to charities and other worthy causes. Indeed, so successful has Junk-It been in diverting waste from landfill that it was a finalist in the 2010 National Recycling Awards.

Mr Martin continued: “The Canter is compact and nimble enough to use on domestic driveways but because you’ll also find our vehicles on rough sites, being loaded with timber, metals and other renovation debris, they have to stand up to plenty of wear and tear too.

“Unlike most 3.5-tonners the Canter is built like a small truck rather than a van, so is able to withstand a lot of punishment and offer the strength and durability we need. In fact, it’s a highly efficient and reliable little vehicle that suits us admirably.”

And he added: “Image is very important to us too, which is why our Canters wear such a strong livery. Given our commitment to the environment, the fact that the latest model is also one of the cleanest trucks on the road in terms of emissions only serves to enhance its appeal.”
