With a setting steeped in aviation history, Redrow is celebrating selling half of the homes at its Farnborough Central development.

The award-winning housebuilder is transforming part of the world-famous former Royal Aircraft Establishment with new homes.

All the townhouses on the development have now been sold and the developer has completed three new build apartment blocks and carefully restored one of the existing historic buildings and converted it into apartments. Work is underway on the fourth new apartment building, with two more still to start and Redrow will also be sensitively refurbishing another existing building.

The unique mix of historic conversions and new-build apartments alongside the art deco-inspired contemporary townhouses has proved to be a hit with homebuyers, with 167 homes sold to date. The final townhouse was sold this week.

Redrow’s homes are adjacent to the ‘heritage quarter’ and alongside two of the most interesting aeronautical legacies of the former RAE – a pair of Grade I listed wind tunnel buildings. The largest, a 24 ft wind tunnel, was used to test full-sized aircraft prototypes, while the transonic wind tunnel was used to test aircraft including Concorde.

They are also situated next to IQ Farnborough, a vibrant new business park with offices, a café, crèche, heritage centre and a four-star hotel and leisure complex.

Tonia Tyler, area sales manager for Redrow Homes (South Midlands), said: “The redevelopment project has reached several major milestones recently. We have sold half of the homes, including the final townhouse this week, and completed the fourth apartment block. There’s still a lot of work to do but the venture already has a fantastic community feel and we’ve had some great feedback from residents who have moved in. We hope to complete the majority of the build during 2012.”

A range of one and two-bedroom apartments are currently priced from £149,950. Close to the heart of town, the apartments are ideal for professionals, first time buyers and downsizers.

With journey times from Farnborough mainline station to London Waterloo of less than 45 minutes, it’s the ideal place for commuters.
