Savvy shoppers save as they search for bargains this Christmas

6th December 2011 Print

With the Christmas shopping frenzy upon us, almost 60% of UK shoppers admit that they're more conscious of what they're spending, turning us into a nation of bargain hunters.

A survey by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks has revealed that almost half (47%) of Britain's shoppers are hunting for the best deals. It seems that women are savvier than their male counterparts when it comes to sniffing out a bargain, with 52% of females revealing they now take the time to shop for a bargain compared to just 40% of men.

The current economic climate has impacted on shoppers' Christmas buying plans with 57% saying they're now more aware of what they're spending and more than a third (34%) focussing on trying to save money. However, some people might be in for a more extravagant festive season as 15% of shoppers admit that their view of finances hasn't been affected.

Steve Reid, Retail Director for Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks, said: "It's unsurprising that the survey found that the majority of people are keeping check of their finances this Christmas.  In fact almost a third (31%) of our own customers have told us that they're going to use cash to buy gifts this holiday season and 51% will use their debit card.

"But despite 34% of UK shoppers saying they're more focussed on saving money this year, and two-thirds (66%) of our own customers saying that they wouldn't be spending anymore on their Christmas celebrations than they did last year, the UK's festive spirit needn't be dampened because knowing you've found a bargain makes giving that present a little more special come Christmas Day."
