The Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson MP, was in Cambourne this month to officially unveil the community’s brand new £2.36 million sports centre.

The entire build cost of the centre was provided by Bovis Homes and Taylor Wimpey, with the homebuilders making an additional contribution of £34,000 towards internal fixtures and fittings.

Mr Robertson said the new Everyone Active sports and leisure centre was one of the best he had seen, and congratulated Bovis Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Cambourne Parish Council for working together effectively to provide the ‘fantastic’ public facility.

“I spend most of my time visiting sports facilities up and down the country and I don’t think I have seen as good a new one as this for a very long time,” said the minister.

“When we won the right to host the 2012 Olympics, we did it on the promise that we would not only lay on a great games, but also that we were going to use those games to inspire more people to play sport – and we simply couldn’t do that without local facilities like this.

“The great lesson here is that it shows how developers can work with the local council to provide a fantastic new facility that’s right on the doorstep for local people to use.”

Neville Stebbing, Project Director for Cambourne, said: “It was a tremendous privilege to welcome a prestigious guest such as Hugh Robertson MP to unveil our fantastic new sports centre in Cambourne.

“The opening of this superb new facility is something local people have been looking forward to for some time, and I’m sure the Cambourne community will take great pleasure in making use of it for many years to come.”

Cllr Clayton Hudson, Chairman of Cambourne Parish Council, which has now been handed ownership of the facility by Bovis Homes and Taylor Wimpey, added: “This facility means a great deal to the people of Cambourne and it is fitting that such an esteemed figurehead for UK sport should be here to declare it officially open.”

The ceremony was followed by an open weekend to showcase the new Everyone Active facility, including appearances from Aston Villa and England footballer Darren Bent and Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle.

Bovis Homes are currently selling homes at Hunters Park, Serpentine Walk and The Fairways.
