The American road trip made easy

1st January 2012 Print

The USA was made for road trips, but now travellers can experience the freedom of the open road and camping in the national parks without the hassle of arranging accommodation or even camping gear, with the launch of Intrepid Travel's range of Self Drive Adventures.

Most self-drive products on the market offer lodge and motel accommodation, but Intrepid Travel’s itineraries arm travellers with a supreme kit of camping gear, maps, local advice and national park passes, so that they can explore America's classic highways, iconic cities and vast landscapes. And with no "under 25" fee (it's common for people under the age of 25 to pay more when hiring a car in the USA), life is truly an open highway when road tripping with Intrepid.

With a broad choice of vehicles (from compact cars to sedans and seven seater vans), accommodation options and self-selected activities, Self Drive Adventures are suitable for solo adventurers, couples, intrepid families and groups of friends looking to take a classic road trip.

"Intrepid's Self Drive Adventures are an exciting development for the company. We are now offering travellers a real point of difference with not only a choice of vehicle but also high quality camping gear, insurance and in-depth itineraries based on local knowledge, which you won't get when hiring a car independently or booking with another operator," said James Thornton, Intrepid Travel's General Manager, Global Sales.

"We believe these trips will fulfil the needs of many people who want to experience North America in this unique way and we look forward to expanding the Self Drive Adventures range in the future."

The new Self Drive Adventure itineraries currently include:

This 13 day trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles may start and end in two of America's most iconic cities, but with the itinerary including Yosemite, Joshua Tree and Zion National Parks, this adventure will definitely satisfy nature lovers. The trip starts from £570 per person.

California's sparkling coast is the star on this 6 day jaunt along Highway 1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Stops at Santa Barbara, Malibu and Monterey show Californian coastal living at its best. The trips starts from £295 per person.
