FIA GT round at Mugello: two Maserati MC12s on the podium

The seventh round of the FIA GT championship took place on Sunday 17 September on the Tuscan circuit of Mugello. It was one of the most difficult races of the season owing to the challenging weather. Michael Bartels-Andrea Bertolini and Jamie Davies-Thomas Biagi's Maserati MC12s came home second and third in a thrilling race. Bartels was 4"723 behind the winners, Wendlinger-Peter (Aston Martin DBR9). The Maseratis beat off the challenge of the Saleen S7 R driven by Bert-Montermini-Janis and the Aston Martins with Pescatori-Babini and Deletraz-Piccini on board.

Maserati takes back-to back victories at Spa 24 Hours

The demanding Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours concluded on Sunday 30 July, at 16.00. After an entire day’s racing, the Maserati MC12 fielded by Vitaphone Racing Team and with Andrea Bertolini-Michael Bartels-Eric Van de Poele in the driving seat, claimed the win. The victory was obtained in the final 45 minutes of racing. This after 589 laps and a close battle with the Aston Martin DBR9 driven by Piccini-Deletraz-Lemeret-Fassler that finished just 1´41"452 behind. In third, and ten laps down, was the Corvette C6R with Longin-Kumpen-Hezemans-Mollekens on board.

A great Maserati one-two brought the third round of the FIA GT at Oschersleben (Germany) to a close on Sunday 2 July. First and second went to the Maserati MC12s driven by Bartels-Bertolini and Davies-Biagi in the Vitaphone Racing Team cars. At the end of the three hour race, the Trident cars outclassed the Aston Martin of Deletraz-Piccini, the Saleen driven by Bert-Janis and the other Aston driven by Gollin-Babini. With this result, Bartels and Bertolini move to the top of the drivers' standings and Maserati stays in second position in the Manufacturers’ Cup. For Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini, Oschersleben is the second win of the season and comes on the heels of the Silverstone victory in round one.

At the Nuerburgring's legendary Nordschleife circuit, the GranSport Trofeo fielded by the Maserati R&D Factory Team crossed the line in 5th position in their category and 35th overall. Ex-Formula 1 driver Jacques Laffite, Gianni Giudici, Patrick Hong and Richard Meaden took it in turn behind the wheel of the Maserati. The result was proof of the vehicle's reliability.

The second round of the FIA GT championship took place on Sunday 28 May at the Czech circuit of Brno. At the end of the three-hour race, the MC12 driven by Michael Bartels-Andrea Bertolini (Vitaphone Racing Team) just missed out on the podium. The Trident pair was just seven tenths off Gollin-Babini (third in the Aston Martin). In second came Deletraz-Piccini (Aston Martin) with Bert-Janis (Saleen) taking top spot. Jamie Davies-Thomas Biagi, in the other Vitaphone Maserati, finished in sixth place.

"Excellence through passion." Maserati arrives in Detroit for the fifth time in its recent history, days after wrapping up its best year ever. With 2,100 cars delivered in the twelve months of 2005, Maserati North America set a new high water mark in the United States and Canada, nearly doubling sales volumes with a 53% increase compared to the 1114 units of 2004. Of the 2,100 cars, 1,550 were Quattroporte, the Italian sedan quickly becoming known as a unique and special offering. In fact, through November of 2005, the Quattroporte maintained a commanding lead in its segment with a 36% share of the market for sedans with a base MSRP between $100,000 and $200,000. The individual models included in the grouping are the BMW 760, Mercedes S600, S55 and S65 and the Bentley Flying Spur.
