The world’s hottest chilli menu hits Gilgamesh
Pan-Asian restaurant Gilgamesh has turned up the heat in the kitchen and created an explosive menu using a selection of the world’s hottest chillies. Executive chef, Ian Pengelley, has brought the Naga, the Scotch and the Trinidad Scorpion Chilli to the Camden restaurant by spicing up some classic Asian dishes that come with a warning - all daredevil diners must sign a disclaimer before ordering.
The Naga Bhut Jokolo chilli is originally from Northeast India and Bangladesh where it is used by the military as a weapon, in the form of pepper spray or in hand grenades, giving an indication of its effect! The Scotch chilli may be small but still packs a punch; the ripe chilli varies in colour from green and yellow to scarlet red. The Trinidad Scorpion has topped the Guinness World Record as the World’s Hottest Chilli with a score of 1.4 million on the scoville scale, 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.
Guests can sample these chillies in four dishes, priced between £6 - £16, but only after signing a disclaimer stating that they are happy to do so. These chillies are so hot, that the signed disclaimer will state that Gilgamesh cannot be held responsible for any consequences diners may suffer during or after eating the dishes. The dishes are green mango and papaya salad with chilli nahm jihm, stir-fried cashew nuts and chicken with dried red chilli and holy basil, and Ian has perfected a fiery chilli paste for the monkfish and physalias (cape gooseberries) jungle curry, a Thai speciality. For dessert, why not try the chilli berry sorbet, the perfect way to end your evening.
Gilgamesh are recommending a soothing Gilgamesh Colada for guests to enjoy alongside their dishes, it is said that the best thing for cooling down chilli is milk. All those who finish a dish will receive a certificate, signed by executive chef Ian Pengelley, congratulating them.
Those brave enough to tackle the heat will be pleased to know there are some health benefits to eating chillies. It is proven that Capsaicin, the chemical in chilli that is responsible for the heat, improves circulation and helps to lower cholesterol. The chemical also acts as a relaxant, reduces inflammation and helps to burn fat.
