Busy autumn ever will see huge spike in first time smartphone users

12th September 2012 Print

Carphone Warehouse is forecasting a bumper autumn as a glut of high profile smartphone launches is expected to bring a flurry of new consumers into the smartphone market.

There has never been a busier period for the mobile space, a massive 15% of UK consumers intend to take the leap and purchase or upgrade to a smartphone in the next three months .

Graham Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer at Carphone Warehouse, says, “It may seem hard to believe for some, but currently just 54% of Brits use smartphones and there are millions of people yet to enter the market. We’re on the precipice of some highly anticipated handset launches and more and more consumers are considering purchasing smartphones than ever before. As the rumour mill goes into overdrive and speculation abounds online, we’re seeing a significant increase in the number of ‘first timers’ asking about and considering shifting to these types of device.”

“New handset launches will affect smartphone prices across various manufacturers, making them more affordable overall. Smartphones are fast becoming the dominant form of wireless communication - the sheer number and range of products now available means that handsets are much more accessible and no longer seen as gadgets confined only to those with high disposable incomes. There is something to suit every price bracket at Carphone Warehouse.”

Geek Squad Agent, Chris Tufts, says, “For many people, swapping over to a smartphone will be the first time they encounter and have to consider data and usage limits. Large bills are easily avoidable by ensuring that you follow our simple ‘Dos and Don’ts of Data’ for first time smartphone users:

Make sure you close your apps - apps use background data even if you’re not using them. Location tracking and updates use data if your apps aren’t fully closed. Shutting down your apps completely will stop this happening.

Use Wi-Fi - always use Wi-Fi when available to keep your mobile data usage to a minimum.

Uploads and Downloads - data limits include downloads AND uploads. Adding a photos to Facebook or Twitter uses data, and will come out of your monthly allowance.

Choose your tariff wisely - getting advice from an independent retailer, like Carphone Warehouse, will help you make sure you are on the correct tariff. Carphone Warehouse has the widest selection of unlimited data tariffs available under one roof.

Download Bill Angel - Carphone Warehouse’s free Bill Angel mobile app is designed to help mobile phone users manage and reduce their bills. The free app tracks calls, texts and data usage and will alert you when you are about to go over any of your set limits.”
