29th November 2012 Print

Qatar Airways has announced its first long-haul Boeing 787 commercial service from Doha to London Heathrow, which will commence on 13th December 2012.

The launch of the 787 Dreamliner signals the first regular flight service from the UK to Doha with Boeing's next generation aircraft, making the connection for travellers from the London hub to Qatar smoother than ever before with unparalleled levels of comfort and luxury on offer.

Whether on a business stopover or a week long leisure break, Qatar offers something for everyone with unforgettable experiences. After a relaxing connection, travellers arriving fresh in Qatar can look forward to an itinerary that is as packed or relaxing as required. A variety of experiences await, including exhilarating desert activities, cultural art exhibitions, traditional shopping, delicious cuisine and top of the range golf courses.

Below are just a few activities to help travellers make the most of their time in Qatar:

Souq Waqif

Renowned for selling garments, spices, handicrafts and souvenirs, the Souq Waqif is a popular tourist attraction. It dates back at least a hundred years and is a must visit for travellers looking to pick up traditional treasures to take home and soak up the essence of the culture amongst the local people.

Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art features one of the largest and finest collections of pieces from around the world. With pieces representing more than 1,400 years of civilization and a building that has become an architectural icon, the museum is regarded as the jewel in Qatar’s cultural crown.

Traditional dining

Taste buds will be spoilt for choice in Qatar. Travellers can choose to try traditional Qatari and Middle Eastern dishes at one of the many restaurants. A typical meal may be traditional hummus to start followed by Koussa mahshi (stuffed courgettes). Alternatively, carnivores can sample a dish of ghuzi (a whole roasted lamb on a bed of rice and nuts) all enjoyed alfresco whilst soaking up the local atmosphere.

Adventure in the desert

For the ultimate adrenalin buzz, take a half-day desert safari to the inland sea and ride on quad-bikes across the sand dunes of Doha. Take to the sands with experienced Qatari guides for an activity known as “dune bashing” which translates to a natural exhilarating ride that rivals any rollercoaster. Half or full-day desert safaris are available from local companies including Qatar Adventures (qataradventure.com).

Camel racing

Head to the Al Shahaniya race track to experience camel racing. During the 11 mile track, try racing alongside the camels in a vehicle or simply witness the traditional Qatari sport from the sideline.

New hotels

Accommodation options are in abundance in Qatar and as the destination gears up to the FIFA World Cup in 2022 new properties are regularly opening their doors. One of the most recent additions is the Amari Doha, the Amari brand’s first property in the Middle East (amari.com/doha). Ideally located fifteen minutes from Doha International Airport and a short drive from the city’s business centres, the hotel is also well located for attractions including the Doha Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif. Other facilities include the brand’s signature Breeze Spa.

In 2013, the Rotana brand is also set to open a second hotel in Doha with its City Centre Rotana hotel, a five star property offering 400 luxurious rooms (rotana.com).

Seats on the 787 Doha – London flights are now bookable online at qatarairways.com, through any Qatar Airways reservation office or local travel agent.
