Jason Atherton’s Social Eating House opening April 2013

11th February 2013 Print

This April chef and restaurateur Jason Atherton will open his second London restaurant, Social Eating House, in Soho on Poland Street. He hopes to create an informal and affordable dining experience with a contemporary bistro menu paying homage to the best of British cooking with international influences.

Paul Hood, who has worked alongside Atherton for six years, will head up the kitchen at Social Eating House, creating a diverse menu. Signature dishes will include Ravioli of wild boar bolognaise, peppered hearts and kidney; Flamed cote de pork, beetroot, white polenta, spring onion and savory; Duck, smoked ham, egg and chips; and CLT – crab, lettuce and tomato vinaigrette.  London honey sponge with goats curd ice cream and Lemon curd pies with peppered pastry crumble will be among the desserts on offer.  Starters will be priced between £6-8 and mains will be approximately £12-18. The simple yet carefully created dishes will be complimented by relaxed and attentive service in the comfortable, humble setting. Inspired by the buzz surrounding the resurgence of Soho, Atherton’s vision is to create a restaurant where diners can enjoy the key elements of the current London dining scene: “I want it to be a social restaurant where the surroundings are as vibrant as the food.  People will be able to enjoy a good meal that is good value.”

Russell Sage Studios, the restaurant’s designers, are working closely with Atherton to create an eclectic room full of character. Exposed brick walls, traditional white-washed copper ceilings and weathered leather banquet seats will be complimented by key pieces of restored furniture on the ground-floor dining area. The first floor bar, called the Blind Pig, will have a similar vintage twist with antique mirrored ceilings and reclaimed wooden chairs. In the bar, mixologist Gareth Evans has created a menu of signature drinks including Thermonuclear daiquiri and Scrub a Dub Dub.  The basement will house a hidden ‘Employees Only’ dining space with a 15 seated wrap-around striking bar. An informal set menu will also be available, offering group diners a relaxed experience.
