Katherine Jenkins, one of the UK’s biggest-selling classical artists, will headline this year’s Glasgow BBC Proms in the Park celebrations.

Katherine will perform with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra who will be under the baton of conductor Stephen Bell. Other acts are to be announced shortly.

The Welsh mezzo soprano and multi-Classic Brit Award-winner will perform at this year’s open-air concert on Glasgow Green on Saturday 13 September. Jenkins shot to fame in 2004 when she was offered a record deal immediately after leaving music college and is now recognised as one of the major artists in the classical-crossover genre.

Katherine Jenkins says: “It’s always such an honour to be asked to perform at the Proms and this time is even more exciting because it will be my first Prom in Glasgow. It's a wonderful city that holds some great memories for me and it’s also where my grandmother was from.”

The evening will be hosted by tenor and BBC Radio Scotland presenter Jamie MacDougall.

Proms in the Park marks the culmination of the BBC Proms season, as thousands of people come together at venues across the UK to be part of the magic of the Last Night. This year’s Scottish celebrations on Glasgow Green will include the traditional live big-screen link-up to the Royal Albert Hall for a family sing-along from Disney’s Mary Poppins. Families and all music lovers of all ages are invited to bring picnics and deck chairs to enjoy the atmosphere and help make this a special night of celebrations.

Scotland’s Proms in the Park is presented by BBC Scotland with support from Glasgow City Council, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and Glasgow Life.

Donalda MacKinnon, Head of Programmes and Services BBC Scotland, said: "Once again BBC Scotland is thrilled to mark the Last Night of the Proms with a spectacular concert on Glasgow Green. There’s always a very special atmosphere at Proms in the Park, thanks to the enthusiasm of the Scottish Prommers (whatever the weather!) and I know this year will be another night to remember.”

Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Councillor Gordon Matheson, said: “We are delighted that BBC Proms in the Park will once again be taking centre stage on Glasgow Green during the Year of Glasgow. With headline acts including Katherine Jenkins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, this year’s event is already shaping up to be one of the cultural highlights of 2014. Glasgow enjoys a very special relationship with the BBC thanks to events such as Proms in the Park and we are very much looking forward to sharing in the final evening of the world’s greatest classical music festival.”

The first half of the concert will be broadcast live on BBC Two Scotland and will be linked up to BBC One for the sing-a-long in part two. BBC Red Button will be showing highlights from the different Proms in the Park events during the evening. The concert will be broadcast live online and on BBC Radio Scotland.
