When you’re buying a new mobile, things can get a bit confusing. There’s so many different phones out there, that you’re not so likely to pick out the best one at first.

To make things a bit easier, we’ve compiled some of the most commonly asked questions when buying a new phone.

1. Pay as you Go or Contract?

The only difference between pay as you go and contract is that when you pay as you go you top up your time when you need it.

Contract gives you set monthly prices for your calls and texts. Exactly how many calls and texts you get on each plan depends on the provider.

You’ll find that you don’t need to go to the big network providers to get the best deal. For instance, you can track down great supermarket offers for pay as you go or contract deals very easily.

2. What does it mean when my phone is network locked?

If you already have a mobile and are simply looking for a new tariff, you need to bear in mind that it may be locked to networks outside of the one you have been using.

Many phones are ‘locked’ to a particular network. You can unlock your phone by taking it to a network unlocking service, or contact your network operator for an unlock code.

3. Can I use my phone overseas?

It will always cost more to use your mobile overseas if you stick to your standard UK phone useage plan. Many providers will offer an overseas call and text option which will reduce the price of calling and texting outside of the UK.

4. What do I do if I have a poor signal?

You don’t need to change providers if you live somewhere with a poor signal. Just get a signal booster. They are simple to use and are often the cheapest solution.

5. Can I access the internet on a phone?

Yes, you can. If you choose a smartphone, you can access the internet, check your emails, and keep up to date on your social networking sites and even stream media.

6. Can I get a free sim card?

You can usually get a free sim card if you are looking for one without a new phone. Free sim cards are a good choice if you want to change your phone number or your pay as you go tariff but you don’t want a new phone.

7. What is a PUK?

A PUK means a PIN Unlock Code, which you will receive as a notification on your phone if you keep entering the wrong PIN code.

In order to get it, you will need to contact your network provider so you can use your phone again.

8. 3G or 4G?

Many modern smartphones will come with 4G capabilities. 4G offers quicker internet access, but you only really need it if you want to be able to access the internet from your phone on the go. It also allows better video calling than 3G.

9. How do I find my mobile number?

If you can’t call another number, such as a landline, and dial 1471, you can get your mobile number by calling the customer services department of your network provider. Your mobile number will also appear on your monthly bill if you choose a contract plan.

10. What if I lose my charger?

This is no real problem, as you can get replacement chargers easily from the internet or in most mobile phone stores.

Phones with a micro USB charging port can also be charged by being plugged into your computer or laptop.
