A new housing development by Lovell has secured a prized national What House? Award - recognising it as one of the best in the UK.

The Bryn Celyn development in South Wales achieved a Silver What House? Award - a symbol of excellence for the housebuilding sector – in the Best Starter Home Scheme category at the national What House? Awards 2014, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London.

High-quality homes for local communities

The awards judges said the 88-home development, which is entirely sold out with more than half the homes having been snapped up by first-time buyers, was ‘a great example of what Lovell has consistently done well for many years – providing high-quality homes for local communities at a competitive price”. The development is near Pontyclun, between Bridgend and Cardiff.

The accolade is Lovell’s first-ever Silver What House? Award. The company has previously achieved Bronze at the WhatHouse? Awards, which are known as the housebuilding industry’s ‘Oscars’.

The judges – all experts in their fields - praised the development’s layout, mix of properties and finishes for creating “varied and appealing street scenes that would be admired on many more expensive schemes,” as well as highlighting the “great location”, establishment of a friendly and neighbourly community and the landscaped play area and wild-flower grassland which have benefitted the wider community in the village. Lovell also worked with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to offer affordable two- and three-bedroom homes through the Homestep low-cost home ownership scheme.

More than half the properties on the development were sold to first-time buyers – many of them local people priced out of nearby villages in the popular Vale of Glamorgan.

Lovell regional director David Gough says: “This is a stunning achievement by the team behind one of our most successful and best-selling developments of new homes.

“The presentation of a national What House? Award recognises the development as one of the best in the UK and is a testimony to the hard work and talent which have helped bring it about. I would like to congratulate everyone involved in creating this fantastic place to live.”

The What House? Award is the latest accolade for the Bryn Celyn development. Earlier this year, Lovell site manager Chris King won a Pride in the Job Quality Award for his superb management of the best-selling housing scheme.
