Can a good bedroom design provide better sleep at night

Sleep is a crucial part of life, as it allows you to recover as well as grow as human beings. It is important for both your physical and mental health. With sleep being so important, it is of great benefit to understand just how important your bedroom is, and this translates to having a good design that facilitates a better sleep at night. Here are just a few of the benefits you gain from your sleep in combination with a well-designed room.

Psychological Impact

One of the ways that altering your bedroom can contribute positively to your ability to get a good night’s sleep is through the psychological impact you will associate with your bedroom. If it is designed properly, you will mentally connect a restful experience with your bed and bedroom, allowing you to get more rest at night. The process of sleeping can sometimes extend longer than you would like, becoming a stressful situation where you are unable to fall asleep quickly and stay asleep throughout the night. You want to create an environment that is conducive to sleep and associated with rest. This way, when you get into bed after a long day, you will immediately transition into a more restful state of mind, allowing you to unwind, release your anxieties that have built up throughout the day, and enter a more relaxed mental state where you will be able to fall asleep easily. Some design choices you will want to consider that can impact your thinking and association are to change the paint and color scheme that you use in your bedroom, using more calming colors, and even considering the layout of your furniture to accommodate for a more mental and emotional connection to your room. 

Physical Comfort

Good bedroom design starts with the bed itself. When you consider the ways that you can prioritize your bed and make changes, additions, or upgrades to things like the frame and mattress, it is beneficial to understand that they have a positive impact on your overall sleep through your physical comfort. Consider resources to learn more, since different materials, especially with your mattress, mattress top, sheets, and covers, all contribute to how you feel when you are laying on your bed. Subtle changes may not feel like they make huge differences, but they do. Certain fabrics will feel more comfortable and softer, while others that are rough may lead to an uncomfortable rest and cause you to feel more fatigued after you wake from your sleep. Other things that you want to consider to ensure that you get a good sleep physically is the size of your bed and mattress, ensuring that you have the right-sized bed for your body, and the pillows and blankets you use to allow for better airflow during the night, especially in different temperatures and weathers. Otherwise, you may disrupt your sleep because you wake up shivering because you feel too cold, or you wake up in a sweat because you are too warm.

A Place To Relax

The design of your bedroom plays a huge role in the quality of sleep you get. Because of that reasoning, you need to consider exactly how to best set up your room that will translate to better rest. One of the difficulties of falling asleep is that you have not separated your day’s stresses and responsibilities from your bedroom. You need to ensure that you do not mix the two, as you will be bringing your thoughts of work, school, or other problems to bed with you. If you do that, you will find it extremely difficult to fall asleep. It is best that when you design your bedroom, you do so with separation in mind. If you have the room in your home to keep your office, study space, or workspace separate, absolutely do so. If you do not have the room to keep things separate, perhaps sharing a home with family members or roommates, there are still things you can do to keep your personal and professional life separate. Use dividers if you can, as a simple wall or even indicator can help mentally separate your work from your place to relax. The organization is another great way to ensure things are not mixed together. Always put your work away when completed, as this will ensure you are not left thinking about it, especially when it comes time to rest. Shelves and organizers will be the best way to help your design a small space that creates an ideal setting when space is not a commodity you have a great deal of.


Work With Your Body’s Circadian Rhythm

One important thing to note is that your body’s natural sleeping schedule is best associated with the amount of light exposure you have. This is because your body recognizes when it is evening and when it is daytime, sending signals to your body to stay away during certain hours, and sending signals to it when it is time to sleep. This has traditionally been linked to optimal times to hunt, gather, and productivity. What this means is that it is much easier to fall asleep, and stay asleep at night time, as well as getting the most benefits from your restful state when the sun is not in the sky. If you happen to work unorthodox hours, perhaps working overnight shifts that require you to sleep during the daytime, you might realize how difficult it is to fall asleep and feel fully rested. A design choice you need to heavily consider if this is your current situation is the addition or use of blackout curtains. These will block out any sunlight that would indicate to your body you should be awake, allowing you to sleep much better.

Do not underestimate the impact your bedroom has on your sleep, both in the hours you gain, but also the quality of your rest. A well-designed bedroom does not just look aesthetically pleasing, but also contributes positivity to your life in several ways. This is especially highlighted in getting a better night’s sleep.
