Stuff2Send tips white van man to make money and cut CO2

26th February 2009 Print

New guidance for couriers on greener van purchase and use called Right Van Man contains useful tips, but doesn’t go far enough on making the best use of load space.

That’s the view from Stuff2Send.com, the service that connects packages and parcels with delivery drivers travelling close to their destination. Site founder Colin Hay says the web service can cut unnecessary journeys – and therefore emissions – while helping couriers make extra cash in the process.

“Right Van Man is a good guide, with some useful environmental tips,” he said. “But we think it misses a trick on running empty. This represents a huge drain on resources for couriers, particularly those travelling long distances, but it also creates unnecessary emissions that sites like Stuff2Send can prevent.”

Right Van Man was produced by the SMMT jointly with the VCA and DfT, and will be promoted through the ActOnCO2 campaign. It was launched today (26 February 2009) in London.

“We’ve written to ActOnCO2 advising them of the benefits our service offers to the environment, and asked for a meeting,” added Hay. “Sadly, we have not yet received a response. That’s a shame because, with the right support and promotion, Stuff2Send offers real potential to deliver significantly fewer CO2 emissions from road transport.”

Stuff2send.com was launched in late December 2008. Since then more than 1,000 delivery drivers and senders have signed up to the service.
