moneysupermarket.com: BT Total Broadband Anywhere

7th May 2008 Print
Commenting on the launch of BT Total Broadband Anywhere Rob Barnes, head of broadband and mobiles at moneysupermarket.com, said: "BT is taking yet another step towards total convergence by offering a broadband service for the home and to those on the move. The free smartphone provides great functionality, but will only be an attraction to current BT customers looking for an upgrade or that something extra.

"The deal offering unlimited downloads on the smartphone in BT WiFi areas is great value for a mobile handset. However when the phone is outside of this, and reverts to GPRS, the connection can become slow and costly. Heavy mobile data users will also need to be wary of the download limit if they want to avoid further charges.

"Customers will save £150 on BT's smartphone, however the additional tariff allowance of texts and minutes could be costly in comparison to other mobile networks such as 3's Mix and Match 500 at £18 per month. WiFi also raises concerns about security as ‘piggy-backing' or connection sharing rises, leaving people open to attack. I'd advise people to be wary of WiFi hotspots and take precautionary measures to protect themselves."
