Des O Connor Des O’Connor is to take over the helm of the popular words and numbers quiz Countdown following former presenter Des Lynam’s decision to step down from the role.

New Des now joins Carol Vorderman and the Countdown team when filming begins later this year at the Leeds-based studios. Viewers will see him on screen in the New Year.

He said: “Having just spent a fun day with the Countdown team it’s easy to see why the show is such a success. Carol is a delight. She’s great fun and couldn’t have been more helpful. I’m really looking forward to being part of the Countdown family.”

Carol Vorderman said: “I'm really looking forward to a new year with a new Des. He came to see us all on Countdown for a day and it just felt right and comfortable. He's got so much energy and enthusiasm he leaves the rest of us exhausted. Here's to a great Countdown year."

Adam Macdonald, Channel 4’s Head of Daytime, adds “Des is one of the UK’s most established and popular entertainers. We’re delighted to welcome him to the Countdown team.”

Since its historic launch 24 years ago, Countdown continues to be the bedrock of the Channel 4 daytime schedule.

Countdown’s first presenter, Richard Whiteley, endeared himself to millions of viewers, became the first face to appear on Channel 4 when it launched on 2 November 1982 and was keen for the show to continue its role as one of the nation’s much loved institutions.

Des O’ Connor joins the show in its 55th series, and Countdown will celebrate its 25th anniversary in November 2007.
