Win Abbey Road Studio Time With EMI & Myspace

21st January 2007 Print
EMI Records has launched an exclusive competition on MySpace to support David Gilmour’s new chart recording of Pink Floyd’s 1967 debut single, ‘Arnold Layne’. This time around, David Gilmour has re-recorded this legendary song with help from friends David Bowie and Pink Floyd original member Richard Wright.

The competition, which can be found at myspace.com/arnoldlaynecompetition, gives MySpace bands the chance to win a recording session at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Eric Winbolt, digital media manager of EMI Records, explains the thinking behind the campaign, “The objective of the campaign is to give MySpace bands the opportunity to cover this classic track and showcase their talent. The best interpretation will not only win studio time at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, but will also have a logo designed for them by Storm Thorgerson, the legendary designer involved in most of the Pink Floyd artwork. Entries will be judged by a combination of MySpace fans, EMI and David Gilmour himself.”

Winbolt continues, “With more than 3million registered bands worldwide, MySpace is one of the most important, direct and targeted promotion platforms available.”

“This competition combines a legendary artist with the fresh creativity of MySpace bands. The chance to win studio time at one of the world’s most iconic studios is sure to inspire the MySpace generation– it’ll be great to see their interpretation of ‘Arnold Layne’,” said Jamie Kantrowitz, Senior Vice President Content and Marketing, MySpace.

The David Gilmour competition closes on 22nd January, with the winner to be announced on 7th February.

‘Arnold Layne’ was released by David Gilmour on Christmas day 2006, and entered the UK singles chart at No. 19, higher than Pink Floyd’s original. His most recent album ‘On An Island’, recorded in part at Abbey Road, is certified Platinum in the UK and topped the album charts across Europe.
