Perfect Mother’s Day Movies

“Ghost”
From the sensual unchained melody pottery scene that spawned a realm of spin-offs to the touching portrayal of a love story cruelly torn apart, Ghost managed to appeal to everyone. One of the most popular films of recent times, it blends the occult with the thriller, comedy with tears and drama with romance. Ghost has been revived this March with a new 2 Disc Special Edition to fall in love with.
Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing, Point Break, Donnie Darko) is Sam Wheat, a caring financier whose life is brutally and suddenly stolen from him by a low life thug. Surviving him and grieving for the loss of her dear partner is Demi Moore’s Molly (G.I. Jane, Striptease, Indecent Proposal), a thoughtful and trusting artist. When Sam realises that he hasn’t quite left Molly’s world, he sets about discovering the real truth behind his death; with a little help.
Academy Award Winner Whoopi Goldberg puts in a classic performance as the slightly charlatan clairvoyant who is forced to examine her own emotions when Sam uses her as a medium. Together they must try to convince Molly that not everyone around her is as honourable as they appear. If they can achieve it, Sam might at least be able to rest in peace.
Now Paramount releases the classic romantic comedy-drama with a superb second disc of brand new extras that will appeal to fans old and new. Unseen footage on the disc includes “Alchemy of a Love Scene”; go behind the scenes and explore one of the most loved and remembered scenes in cinema history - the famous pottery scene or seize the chance to relive Oda Mae’s spiritual séance with the documentary, “Inside the Paranormal”.
“Ghost Stories: The Making of a Classic” takes an in depth retrospective look at making the film featuring new interviews with Whoopi Goldberg, Patrick Swayze and Jerry Zucker whilst ‘Apparitions: The Visual Effects of Ghost explores how the special effects team achieved the ‘magic’ in the film. Remember the first time Ghost touched your heart and watch the original theatrical trailer, view the photo gallery or listen to the exclusive audio commentary with Director Jerry Zucker and Writer Bruce Joel from the original DVD release.
Director Jerry Zucker’s Ghost did something that few popular films can. It created scenes that have stuck in the collective memory forever, it melted hardened hearts and it won serious awards across the board at the Academy Awards. Whoopi Goldberg won Best Actress in a Supporting role for her turn as Oda Mae Brown, the slick script won Best writing and Best Screenplay for Bruce Joel Rubin and it was nominated for Best Film Editing, Best Music, Best Original Score and Best Picture.
Life’s a funny old thing, and Ghost reminds us to laugh in the face of adversity. Just remember the tissues too.
GHOST, 2 Disc Special Edition is available to buy from 5th March 2007 from Paramount Home Entertainment (RRP £19.99), Certificate 15.
“An Officer and a Gentleman”
There are few moments in movie romance history as iconic and enduring as Zack Mayo, resplendent in crisp naval whites sweeping Paula Pokrifi off her factory floor to the soaring sounds of Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong. One of the most glorious and uplifting film endings ever was just one part of that most rare of Hollywood phenomena – a film that smashed box office expectations and won critical acclaim.
Now re-released by Paramount, this classic tale of growing up, honour and love is as inspiring as ever. The new 2 Disc Special Edition release is packed with special features including a retrospective documentary on the film “25 Years Later” and an exclusive featurette on stars who played the military officers and the men who inspired them, “The Cadets Reunite”.
Take a trip and visit the town where the film was shot in “Return to Port Townsend” and relive the romance in the film score with “Lifts Us Up”. Richard Gere and Louise Gossett detail the intense training required of them in filming the climatic showdown between Mayo and Foley in ‘Gere and Gossett: Hand to Hand Combat” whilst Director Taylor Hackford invites us to hear his thoughts on creating his classic movie.
Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) is an aloof, aspiring naval pilot who embarks on a tough 13-week officer’s training programme. Under the tutelage of a direct drill instructor Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.), Zack learns the art of service, but something is missing. To be the perfect gentleman, the art of humanity is just as vital – something the taciturn Mayo is lacking. As he struggles to acquire some serious life skills, he meets and develops a close friendship with fellow trainee, Sid Worley (David Keith). When the two new recruits meet two gold digging factory girls, their lives become more entwined and complicated, for better and worse.
Casting Richard Gere (Pretty Woman, Unfaithful) as the stiff, handsome upstart whose life must take on more meaning if he’s to live out his dream ensured that the young actor’s fortune was finally secured. Thrust into the limelight as a result, the film positioned Gere as Hollywood’s most sought-after pin-up. For Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment) as factory girl Paula, it meant an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a leading role, and for Louis Gossett Jr, an Academy Award win for his supporting role. More Oscar accolades were festooned on the film - Best Film Editing, Best Music, Best Original Score, Best Writing, and Best Screenplay Written Directly for Screen.
