Cult Show ‘My So-Called Life’ To Be Released On DVD

Also featuring Jared Leto, the plot centres around the trials and tribulations of high schooler Angela Chase, and the surrounding people in her life: from school friends to extended family.
“I'm still identified as Angela and I've done a lot of different kinds of work since then. But that role really resonated with people. I am profoundly grateful for the show, and that it has been as warmly received as it was, as long as it has. It was really special” commented Claire Danes.
Produced by thirtysomething creators Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick My So-Called Life tackles every teen issue imaginable (including the then-controversial topic of teen homosexuality). Through it all, Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee (both for My So-Called Life) Danes plays a neurotic, touching, and funny character – whether obsessing over a blemish or negotiating the rocky terrain of first love.
The pilot episode (included on the DVD) introduces viewers to Angela, who is contemplating breaking out of the mould she has always occupied as a well-behaved daughter and straight-A student. When she begins to break away from her long-time best friend, Sharon (Devon Odessa), in favour of the company of wild child Rayanne (A.J. Langer) and dyes her hair red, Angela's parents are alarmed, fearing they have a textbook case of adolescent rebellion on their hands.
The show ran for only one series, losing out in the ratings war to a ‘new’ show that premiered at the same time – NBC’s ‘Friends’. However, it quickly found a dedicated fan base that has continued to grow over the years: a second series of the show was almost commissioned following demonstrations and petitions from fervent fans.
My So-Called Life is still hailed as one of the first truly influential teen dramas on television, paving the way for future shows such as Dawson’s Creek and The OC.
''It's the most painfully honest portrayal of adolescence ever on television'' said Greg Berlanti, executive producer of Dawson’s Creek and creator of Everwood.
For the first time ever, all 19 episodes of the critically-acclaimed television show are available in one 5 disc DVD box set, making this an essential addition to any ‘cult’ collection.
