The nations favourite Christmas songs revealed

20th December 2007 Print
'The Fairytale of New York’ has been voted the nation’s favourite Christmas song following a survey of over 1,000 people across the UK, conducted by Magic Music TV and Radio. Welcome festive news for the band, which famously recorded the track while intoxicated and featured the late Kirsty MacColl who’s song was recently censored and then un-censored by Radio One.

Over 23% (23.2%) of those surveyed voted the Christmas classic to the Number One spot.

Belle of the Christmas ball, Mariah Carey was narrowly beaten into second place with her office Christmas party anthem ‘All I Want For Christmas’ which was released in 1991 and reached No.2 in the UK charts. The song is also a favorite with Atomic Kitten girl and mother of one, Jenny Frost who said; “This always gets me dancing around the Christmas tree – every time!”

Birmingham based Wizzard entered the chart at number 3 (10%) with ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ just tipping ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ by Slade (9.4%).

With rumours of a Wham reunion still rife, it is little surprise that ‘Last Christmas’ – which was written by George Michael - completes the top 5 with 8.5% of the votes. The song was famously released three times. Once as part of a double-A-side, again a year later, and then after the band split in 1984.

Other songs which made the top 10, as voted for by Magic radio listeners included the original version of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ (no.6, 8.4%) featuring a plethora of artists including Bono, Bananarama and Boy George as well as ‘When a Child is born’ by Boney M (no.10, 3%)

They may be flying high at the moment with their Worldwide tour but the Spice Girls failed to make it into the top 10 with their Number One smash ‘2 Become 1’ which only reached Number 13 in this chart. Even more surprisingly, the world’s most famous girl band’s two other Christmas Number One’s ‘Too Much’ and ‘Goodbye’ didn’t even make the list.

The Nations Favourite Top 50 Christmas songs will be broadcast on Magic Music TV, Sky channel 352 and Virgin 330/340 on Christmas Day from 9am – Tune in and enjoy the sing-along!
