Poll suggests Diana inquest was waste of money

9th April 2008 Print
More than three-quarters (78%) of people think the inquest into the death of Diana, Princess of Wales was a total waste of money, according to a poll commissioned for BBC Two's Newsnight.

The results of the ICM poll, broadcast on BBC TWO at 10.30pm, show that just 19% of those polled said that they thought the inquest was worth it to discover the truth; 2% answered don't know, 1% did not answer and 1% answered none of these.

However almost a third (31%) thought there was something suspicious about the death but the majority of those polled (62%) thought that the Princess's death was a tragic accident.

The younger age groups were by far the most sceptical. Almost half (46%) of young people aged 18 to 24, according to the poll, believe there was something suspicious about Diana's death.

However, 44% of those in this age group thought the death was a tragic accident, 6% answered don't know and 3% didn't answer.

When it came to the older age groups, only 23% of the 65-plus age group believed her death was suspicious.
