ITV survey reveals public fears over climate change

ITV survey reveals public fears over climate change A recent survey commissioned by ITV1 to support the transmission of Flood this weekend has found that over two-thirds of those surveyed (71%) feel that global warming is having an effect on weather conditions in the UK, with almost half (44%) believing that climate change poses a direct threat or risk to their lifestyle or home.

The survey also found that, despite 70% of the public being worried that flooding in the UK will continue to get worse, that over half (58%) believe that the effects of climate change can be reduced by changing the way we act now. To reflect their views 76% of the public admit that they have personally changed their behaviour to be more environmentally sound.

Flood draws you in to the staggering catastrophe caused when nature's ultimate force tests every resource – human and technological - of a great metropolis.

The two-part drama features an all star cast including Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting), Jesslyn Gilsig (Nip/Tuck), Tom Courtenay (The Golden Compass), David Suchet (Poirot), Joanne Whalley (Scandal), Nigel Planer (The Young Ones), and Tom Hardy (Stuart: A Life Backwards). Flood is a Power Co-production, with Moonlighting Films (South Africa) and Muse Entertainment Enterprises (Canada), produced by Justin Bodle, Peter McAlesse, Michael Prupas, Philip Key and Genevieve Hofmeyr

Each episode will be followed by an on-screen credit directing viewers to the Environment Agency’s Floodline. Floodline gives practical advice on what to do before, during and after a flood, as well as offering a ‘Flood Warnings Direct’ service, where those living in a flood warning area can receive prior warning of flooding via text, email or a phone call. ITV and production company Power have worked closely with the Environment Agency to ensure that viewers can take further steps to protect themselves and their property if they are worried by scenes that appear in the series.

Steve East, Thames Barrier technical support team leader said:

“This two part series offers up some pretty scary scenes of London engulfed in a tidal wave of water. In reality, a team of Environment Agency engineers and operations staff at the Thames Barrier work continuously to ensure that this remains firm fiction, with most recent modelling showing that the Barrier can withstand expected flood pressures for many years to come. Of course, it is also right that we plan for the future, and we have a team of experts already looking ahead to the year 2100 and beyond.

“The Thames Barrier is a structure admired the world over for its efficiency and resilience. This production may be a work of fiction but it has served to highlight the challenges and investment needed to maintain effective flood management programmes in the UK.”

Flood is on ITV1 on the 4th and 5th of May.
