Carlton Riverside – A Luxury Gourmet Restaurant

Alan and Mary Ann Gilchrist have opened their new restaurant with rooms, Carlton Riverside in Llanwrtyd Wells. The small Welsh town is where Mary Ann was awarded a Michelin Star for her cooking at Carlton House and was winner of four True Taste Restaurant Awards. Consistently her cooking has won high acclaim as one of the leading restaurants in Britain in The Which? Good Food Guide. She was also the first chef to win the crown of Mid Wales Chef of the Year.

Carlton Riverside is a converted inn on the banks of the River Irfon, one of the main tributaries of the sylvan Wye. It has spacious lounges and a bar for pre and post meal drinks. The restaurant with beautiful views of the river seats twenty people in great comfort with large tables well spaced out.

The décor is contemporary combining latest style and comfort of the twenty first century into the nineteenth century building. Carlton Riverside continues to operate as a local pub with a spacious public bar entered from the riverbank where people can enjoy ales, wines and delicious food.

Mary Ann’s cooking style has developed in line with the most up to date chefs. Her dedication to fine local produce is epitomised in her 3 course Iron menu that sources meats and vegetables from the local smallholdings and farms. Similarly her gourmet 5 course menu uses these fine ingredients in intelligent innovative dishes. These display a range of cooking techniques to bring intrigue and full enjoyment and appreciation of best quality seasonal Welsh ingredients.

Her specialities include Iron Valley lamb in three ways, Welsh Black beef triad, Montgomery pork with tapenade, sewin with beurre blanc, bass with fennel, Anglesey scallops with Llyn bacon, rhubarb mousse, chocolate fondant and artisan Welsh cheeses.

Alan supervises the front of house and the wine list. He has sourced a truly novel range of wines to complement the fine cuisine. Wines come from every producing country with traditional areas alongside new world innovative producers. A selection of these is offered to complement the gourmet menu, poured to one’s taste and appetite making a great dinner party ambience.

Carlton Riverside has four bedrooms with superb comfort and contemporary décor mingled with antiques in a most stylish way, plus a self contained flat which can be taken on a self catering basis.

Llanwrtyd Wells is 90 minutes drive from the Severn Bridge on the M4; 40 minutes from Hay on Wye; The Mid Wales National Rail line from Swansea to Shrewsbury stops at Llanwrtyd Wells.
