London Chef Takes Self-Sufficiency To The Coast

23rd August 2007 Print
The Allotment Dave Flynn, an allotment owner and resident from Twickenham, South West London and professional chef of over 30 years having worked in London and Australia, is seeing his ideas for a self-sufficient restaurant become a reality by opening up his first-ever establishment, “The Allotment”, in the South East Kent coastal town of Dover.

With environmental issues in the food industry under ever-increasing scrutiny, such as the distance many supplies have to travel by road or other means, “The Allotment” is aiming to reduce and eradicate the need for this by becoming a restaurant which serves food entirely grown, produced and supplied by the local community.

"The Allotment" opened in June this year and Dave's vision of involving the local community in his new business is already coming to fruition. He is now working with local allotment owners who supply him with their excess produce, which he includes in his menus and serves to customers. In exchange owners are offered either meal vouchers or reduced prices on certain menu items.

As owner and proprietor of Dover's newest bistro / restaurant and following on from last week's "National Allotment Week", he is inviting all local allotment owners to an informal Open Evening at his premises on Wednesday 22 August from 6pm to 8pm.

He would like owners to come along with some examples of their produce, meet with other allotment holders, enjoy a glass of wine and discuss ways of becoming further involved in Dover's latest, unique eaterie, as food suppliers to the "The Allotment".
