Marlborough Tavern wins national food award The Marlborough Tavern in Bath has been named Newcomer of the Year at the prestigious national Pub Food Awards 2007. At a lavish awards ceremony on Wednesday 7th November in London’s Hurlingham Club, The Marlborough Tavern fought off fierce competition from hundreds of other UK entries plus three other shortlisted finalists on the night to pick up the accolade.

The pub, located next to Bath’s famous Royal Crescent, was recognised for its consistently high standards in food presentation, product sourcing and all round passion for all aspects of food operation. In addition, the award recognised innovation and entrepreneurial flair in establishing a successful pub business in one of the UK’s most thriving cities.

Owners of the popular venue, Joe Cussens and Justin Sleath, were honoured to receive the accolade ahead of such strong competition. The award comes at the end of a busy year for The Marlborough Tavern which has seen the outlet establish itself as a destination food pub following a major refurbishment last summer.

Joe Cussens commented, “It feels absolutely fantastic to have won this award! We’ve worked really hard to get the pub established, and to have our efforts recognised by such a prestigious award feels great.”

“It would have been impossible to win it without the hard work and commitment of our staff. We have a fantastic team working with us and I’m looking forward to celebrating with them in person. I want to say a big thank you to all of them, from our wonderful KPs and chefs in the kitchen to all our waiting and bar staff, everyone has contributed in some way to helping us achieve this award.”

“In particular we would like to thank our Head Chef, Richard Knighting for his passion, hard work and commitment in helping us turn The Marlborough Tavern into such a great place to eat.”

The menu is developed by Head Chef Richard Knighting. This is Richard’s first head chef position, having trained under Marco Pierre White at the Michelin starred Mirabelle (London).

Describing his menu, Richard said “We have a clear approach to our food – to find the best and freshest produce and to create essentially simple dishes where the quality of the ingredients speaks for itself. Married to that is a passion for inventiveness that sees our menu constantly changing. Our food is essentially, though not slavishly, English in character, uses local produce wherever possible and is seasonal.”

The team at The Malborough Tavern look forward to welcoming patrons to their pub, new and old, from near and far, to enjoy their delicious food and drink.
