Whitby restaurant serves up pioneering website
Award winning restaurant, Green’s of Whitby, North Yorkshire, is just a seagull’s cry away from the harbour of this important fishing Port, where each morning Rob Green - chef/owner - selects his ‘catch of the day’ from the trawlers. These trawlers, often out at sea for up to two weeks at a time, have amongst their crew, young trainees, who have found their way onto a unique fishing apprenticeship training scheme via a pioneering website, initiated and sponsored by Rob himself - Whitbyfishingschool.co.uk.
This web site is vital for The Whitby & District Fishing Industry Training School, the only company in Britain delivering the full Marine Vessel Support Deck Hand Fishing Apprenticeship – and ultimately training the next generation of trawler crews and skippers.
“Since my wife, Emma, and I opened Green’s six years ago, we have become increasingly aware of our need to support the fishing industry, which is the lifeblood of our business. We had already built up close links with The Whitby & District Fishing Industry Training School, and suggested that the best way that we could help them, was to set up a web site.” said Rob.
Chief Executive of the Fishing Training School, Anne Hornigold said "Rob and Emma have always supported our school excellently. They take great interest in our progress and keep in constant touch with us. It's great to be associated with them".
‘Trawlermen’, the flagship BBC series, has been responsible for a continuing surge of interest amongst young people keen to brave the high seas for a taste of this challenging way of life.
The web site - whitbyfishingschool.co.uk - has proved invaluable in providing an instant point of contact, and access to this unique apprenticeship.
Founder, and Chairman of the Whitby & District Fishing Industry Training School, Arnold Locker said: “Rob & Emma are a fantastic support to the fishing community here in Whitby, and are always ready to give something back. We are indebted to them for their support in recognising the importance of training the next generation of fishermen. This will certainly help to ensure the survival of Whitby’s fishing heritage.”
Green’s Restaurant is located at 13 Bridge Street, Whitby, North Yorkshire.
