Each day is Valentine's Day

6th February 2009 Print
Valentine's Day might be a week away, but why wait until then for an amorous dinner? The Good Food Guide names ten of the UK's most romantic restaurants on any day of the year.

February 14th is the busiest night for restaurants, and will be even more so this year as it falls on a Saturday. It can be an ordeal for diners confronted with red roses, tinkling pianos, heart-shaped chocolates and over-priced champagne.

But here's ten great restaurants for a romantic tryst, and they're all highly rated by The Good Food Guide for their cuisine too:

Simpsons, Edgbaston, Birmingham - a gorgeous restaurant delivering refined modern French cooking in several intimate dining rooms.

The Cellar, Anstruther, Scotland - coal fires, candlelight, a seafood restaurant with loads of character.

Michael Wignall at the Latymer, Bagshot, Surrey - set in lush parkland, etched-glass panels between tables add a touch of intimacy.

Hipping Hall, Cowan Bridge Lancashire - a dramatic seventeenth-century house with first-rate food.

Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, Fowey, Cornwall - has a stunning view of the estuary, and provides classy cooking in a relaxed ambience.

Arundell Arms, Lifton, Devon - a seductive setting with log fires, comfy sofas and unpretentious cooking.

Galvin at Windows, Park Lane, London - a stunning panoramic view of London combined with sophisticated French cooking.

Yorke Arms, Ramsgill, Yorkshire - an elegant restaurant in a creeper-clad coaching inn overlooking the village green.

Crown at Whitebrook, Gwent, Wales - fine dining in a converted seventeenth century inn in a heavily-wooded valley.

Great House, Lavenham, Suffolk - a smart French restaurant-with-rooms in a wonderful timbered building.

Elizabeth Carter, Editor of The Good Food Guide, says: "We're not saying people should boycott Valentine's Day, but if you want to have a romantic meal out, why wait until the busiest night of the year? Go this weekend, or the middle of next week, to the restaurants we've chosen and you'll have a fabulous time. In fact, you'll have a great time whenever you go."
