Vintage Bodega meets Vanguard Design in Jerez

18th February 2009 Print
Apartment Jerez If you’re going to live in a unique building you may as well be daring and create an interior space that’s just as standout. That’s exactly what the owner of this loft apartment in a restored sherry bodega in Jerez has had the vision to achieve. Now on the market, this city party-pad can be yours for just 350,000 euros.

The southern Spanish city of Jerez is the aristocratic seat of sherry and iconic cathedral-like bodegas are found dotted around prime locations in the old cobbled city centre. Whilst many continue to produce fortified wine, as they have done for centuries, others have found themselves in the hands of visionary property developers who have sympathetically created some quite spectacular living spaces.

Unsurpassed central location aside, converted bodegas make ideal residential pied à terres. High vaulted ceilings allow for interesting mezzanine levels and original features from exposed stone pillars to sturdy wooden beams give authentic character. Meanwhile their finite supply and striking exterior architecture guarantee that a buy in a bodega will stack-up as a sound investment.

For 350,000 euros, Mercers is able to offer a vast 194m² built two bedroom two bathroom designer loft in a building which has been part of Jerez’s streetscape since the 18th century. Recently converted and lovingly restored, the modern minimalism sits comfortably within a classic Andalusian façade and we defy anyone who is lucky enough to take a peek inside not to utter the immortal word ‘wow’.

Accessed via a soaring atrium, the loft has a convivial open-plan layout with a sleek white and stainless steel kitchen offset against the most sumptuous deep claret walls. The living area, flooded by light from lightly frosted floor-to-ceiling glass, continues with those red walls whilst a white leather corner sofa arrangement and matching lounger are grounded by soft rugs and rich solid wood flooring.

Both bedrooms, one reached by an open-riser wooden staircase on a mezzanine floor, have wooden flooring, exposed beamed ceilings and traditional stonework, whilst oversized night-time New York cityscapes add a truly modern digital art statement. The two bathrooms, one of which is en-suite, feature intricate mosaic tiling and chic white sanitary-ware. To complete the picture, a communal swimming pool with sunlounging areas and shower with changing facility sit in the bodega’s grounds.

Price 350,000 euros, furniture negotiable.
