Gorgeous Georgian townhouses in Canterbury

The Georgian townhouses at Barton Mill in Canterbury by Weston Homes Pockets of Georgian era townhouses exist all over the country, they are best known by the sweeping curved terraces of Bath, the carefully cultivated squares of central London, the seafronts of Brighton and Hove, and the dour grandeur of Edinburgh’s New Town area…..and now at Barton Mill in Canterbury, Kent. Here, Weston Homes is restoring a splendid grade II listed Georgian terrace back to its former glory to provide five townhouses.

The building was originally part of the medieval monastic settlement and included a Chapel, the remains of which can be seen in the fine flint wall and buttress which form the river end of the terrace. The main part of the building is thought to date from the eighteenth century. Interesting features to note are the attractive large sash windows, with gauged brick arches over and also the classical porticos framing the main entrance.
Recognising the importance of this building, Weston Homes is carrying out the repairs and refurbishments with an eye sympathetic to the history of the site as a whole. The homes will be built to a high standard that will include skirtings, architraves, doors and dados that reproduce the original period features. In some rooms, if possible, window shutters will be refurbished and reinstated and all the old windows will be reproduced with single glazing to match the previous. In two of the properties the cellars will be kept, cleaned and repaired to provide useful storage accommodation.

Located on the Sturry Road and just a short walk from the centre of the culturally significant city, Barton Mill will provide this idyllic corner of East Kent with 141 new homes.

Gareth Jacob, Sales and Marketing Director for Weston Homes comments: “To be able to truly appreciate the homes at Barton Mill, we have designed a show home to offer purchasers an insight to Weston’s trademark high specification and stunning interiors. To date, the scheme has been a great success with purchasers coming from far and wide to visit us and secure a new home at the scheme.”

The ground floor of the show home provides a bright atmosphere, presenting a light and airy living area with French doors, which open on to a private garden. Alongside the living room on the ground floor is the spacious kitchen/diner including quality designer kitchen units, worktops, up stands and stainless steel splash backs. The kitchen also boasts enviable integrated appliances including ceramic hob, oven and extractor chimney. Further appliances that are available in all three-bedroom properties include an integrated washer/dryer, fridge freezer and dishwasher, providing all the modern appliances necessary for a hassle free life.

The first floor of the exquisite property offers three well-sized bedrooms including a bespoke dressing room and en-suite bathroom incorporated into the master bedroom. The primary bathroom features beautifully crafted white wall hung sanitaryware, providing an elegant oasis of calm.

Canterbury sits on the beautiful River Stour and is comprised of seven small islands. Barton Mill is situated on the most downstream of all the islands and as a result the new Weston Homes development is just a short walk along the river to Canterbury’s stunning city centre. Canterbury is a popular city with visitors and residents alike, boasting the world’s most famous Cathedral, which has been the spiritual seat of the Church of England for more than five centuries. Canterbury was named a world heritage site in 1988 thanks to attractions such as St Martins Church and St Augustine’s Abbey providing a wealth of history and culture.

Starting prices for the homes in the first phase of the development are available from £199,950 inclusive of two parking spaces.
