Pier Road gets the go ahead for a new lease of life

10th August 2007 Print
Berkeley First, the wholly owned subsidiary of the Berkeley Group responsible for delivering high quality student accommodation and homes for all, secured a new and vibrant future for Pier Road, Gillingham on Wednesday 8 August, when Medway Council unanimously gave the green light for accommodation for 604 students on the former Akzo Nobel site.

The detailed proposals for the Pier Road Scheme will provide an increased number of units to assist the University of Kent meet its ambitions to provide good quality, purpose built student accommodation to cope with growing demand.

Matthew Biddle, Managing Director for Berkeley First comments:

“Pier Road is a great opportunity to make a positive contribution towards the regeneration of this area of Gillingham. The scheme will provide much needed good quality accommodation for new students wishing to study at the University of Kent and help alleviate pressure on the local housing market. We are naturally delighted that the scheme was so well received by the Council and look forward to making the first steps towards this vibrant regeneration of Pier Road.”

The consented brownfield scheme will include two six-storey buildings comprising 545 student study bedrooms, 59 student studios and an express-style supermarket. It is hoped that works will start on site towards the end of this year.
