Flexible living at amazing prices

25th August 2008 Print
Townhouses, once the preserve of wealthy socialites and confined to major cities, are now on sale at Holborough near Maidstone. Berkeley Homes (Kent) Ltd is bringing this flexible style of living to Holborough in the shape of three different styles of four-bedroom townhouse, with prices starting at just £265,000.

Berkeley Homes (Kent) Ltd has transported the townhouse from the city and brought it to Kent so buyers can enjoy the luxury of split-level living with the benefits of the surrounding countryside. Purchasers can choose from The Madison, from £265,000, The Delaware, from £270,000 and The Claremont, from £395,000.

Holborough enjoys an excellent rural setting, with direct access to the North Downs - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The verdant surroundings provide peaceful walks and acres of space for children and families to explore.

Townhouses literally were ‘homes in the town' - pads in London or other cities where the aristocracy used to decamp to during the social season. The idea that a townhouse denotes a property with more than two floors is an American one, and can be attributed to homes with multiple floors in places like New York, where it's not uncommon for townhouses to reach six levels or more.

The trend for building up rather than out was due to a lack of land in popular towns but the multi-level way of living proved popular and the design flourishes today. The townhouses at Holborough, with accommodation spread over three levels, lend themselves to growing families who crave space and more than one bathroom, as well as couples who like to entertain. In fact, the townhouses offer couples the luxury of ‘guest floors' as opposed to guest bedrooms, with a whole level of privacy and bathroom facilities.

The Madison offers 1,085 square feet of living space, with some examples having a balcony off the living room. The ground floor is the hub of the home, with an open plan kitchen/family room with patio doors leading to the garden, plus a cloakroom/utility facility. Two bedrooms and an en suite to bedroom one can be found on the first floor, while bedrooms three and four are on the second floor, along with a family bathroom.

The Delaware has a slightly different arrangement, offering 1,108 square feet of space. The ground floor boasts a spacious kitchen and separate family/dining room, which has patio doors leading to the garden. The first floor contains two bedrooms, with a balcony off the front bedroom, and a family bathroom. Two further bedrooms are on the second floor, with the largest benefiting from a balcony and en suite.

The Claremont is the largest of the townhouses, affording 1,501 square feet of living space. The ground floor is perfect for entertaining or growing families. A large eat-in kitchen/diner is at the front of the property and a family room is to the rear, with patio doors leading to the garden. Completing the ground floor is a spacious hallway and cloakroom. The second floor boasts a well-proportioned drawing room with its own balcony, and bedroom one, which has its own en suite. The third floor is home to three more bedrooms and a family bathroom.

Piers Clanford, Managing Director of Berkeley Homes (Kent) Ltd, comments: "Townhouses deliver a unique style of living that benefits a number of purchasers, from growing families to professional couples who entertain. By building townhouses at Holborough we are combining one of the most flexible property layouts with the Kentish country - a multi award-winning combination that represents value for money."
