19th century coach houses restored to former glory Listed residential properties offer a tangible link to the past and a unique opportunity to make an historic building your own home. The Coach Houses at Millgate Homes’ Sundridge Park development - a Grade II listed former stables building dating back to 1803 - offers just such an opportunity.

Originally designed by Samuel Wyatt, a noted architect of the early industrial period, the Coach Houses are set within an attractive crescent shape adjacent to the Sundridge Park mansion house. The fine brickwork and external details of the Coach Houses have remained in very good condition and will now be restored by Millgate Homes to full glory. Five new homes will be created, consisting of one 5 bedroom, two 3 bedroom and two 2 bedroom units.

Sundridge Park is a majestic mansion building near Bromley in Kent. Samuel Wyatt took over the running of Sundridge Park in 1803 from original architect John Nash and was initially responsible for the interior design of the mansion house itself. In 1805 he designed the crescent shaped coach-house stables to serve residents and visitors to the house.

The Coach Houses fully display Wyatt’s abilities as one of the finest neo-classical architects of his day, as seen in the attractive central clock tower and slate roofing. Beyond the Sundridge Park coach house, Wyatt was responsible for a fascinatingly diverse portfolio of work which includes Albion Mills in London, several lighthouses including Flamborough Head and Dungeness, and various country houses, farm buildings and patents for cast-iron bridges.

Millgate Homes’ refurbishment of the Coach Houses will include a tasteful renovation of Wyatt’s original brickwork, sash windows, and timber. Internally, new soundproofed floors and walls will be integrated in order to bring the new homes up to Millgate’s high-quality modern standards. The five new Coach House homes will each feature a stepped terrace private garden, cut from within a natural embankment.

Yet despite the Coach Houses having such a unique history, new purchasers at Sundridge Park will certainly feel at home in making their new Sundridge Park property their own. Millgate’s renovation includes an impressive range of interior features including a Mark Wilkinson kitchen designed specifically for the project.

Interested purchasers will have to move quickly to secure their piece of Sundridge Park history, with four of the Coach House units now remaining and plenty of interest shown since the project’s September launch.
