Be inspired - volunteer abroad

8th June 2007 Print
Cheapflights.co.uk – the UK’s leading flight price comparison website – has encouraged people to consider volunteering abroad through its latest poll.

To highlight the role Diana, Princess of Wales, played in raising awareness of volunteer work, Cheapflights selected existing charitable causes, most of which the Princess herself supported. The poll asked voters to choose the location and the cause for which they would most like to volunteer.

The number one destination for Cheapflights’ users - with 37 per cent of the vote - was Brazil. Here travellers voted to volunteer for the Brazil Youth Outreach which is renowned for its work helping abandoned street children.

Raising AIDS awareness in Tanzania was the second most popular location in which to volunteer with 23 per cent of the vote. Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina came third with 18 per cent. The devastation caused across the US Gulf Coast in 2005 by the hurricane still affects many people today.

Mother Teresa was an inspirational figure to Diana, and volunteering at her hospice in India came fourth with 14 per cent of the vote. Yaounde Deaf School in Cameroon, visited by Diana in 1990, took fifth place with six per cent.
