An orchestra fit for a king

10th December 2007 Print
On the eve of the first direct Oman Air flight between Muscat, Oman and London Gatwick, his Majesty, Sultan Qaboos bin Said allowed a rare appearance of his royal orchestra at a gala dinner attended by senior London diplomats.

The unique orchestra has played for heads of state including her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and fuses Middle Eastern and Western influences and even includes two bagpipe players who play alongside the Arabic and brass sections.

The 32-piece troupe, which can only perform with his majesty’s permission, were flown over on the inaugural flight complete with over four tonnes of equipment.

The Sultanate of Oman is fast becoming one of the hottest destinations in the Middle East. Boasting dramatic scenery, a rich culture, wealth of historical sites, beautiful beaches, five-star hotels and fabulous shopping, Oman offers something for everyone without the commerciality of neighbouring Dubai.

Departing six times a week, the flights, which take just over seven hours, will cost from just £343 return and be available to economy and business travellers.

The Sultanate of Oman is located in the south-eastern shores of Arabia and covers 3, 098,500 sq. kms. Flanked to the north-west by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia to the west and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen to the south-west, Oman is the mythical home of Sindbad the Sailor and known as the Gulf’s favourite getaway.
