Maharashtra for adrenaline junkies

15th February 2008 Print

Maharashtra is famous for Bollywood, art and culture, awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage sites, cave complexes, and breathtaking landscape. However, the area now also offers plenty to tempt thrill-seekers, and is aiming to become the new destination in India for adrenaline junkies.

There are numerous exhilarating activity options throughout the state. Various adventure camps throughout Maharashtra can organise activities including ravine explorations, river crossings, nature walks and paragliding. Companies include: Hans Adventure Camp - Hansadventure.com, and Outbound Adventure – Outboundadventure.com.

Popular paragliding areas within easy reach of Mumbai include Panchgani, a colonial hill station excellent for ridge soaring; Raigad Fort accessed by cable car where paragliders can fly from many directions; and Ratnagiri beach with spectacular views over the coastline. In Kamshet, the hills are dotted with ancient cave temples, and medieval hill fortresses that are now flying sites, and Kondeshwar Cliff is an ideal spot for advanced pilots.

For year-round white-water rafting the Kundalika River at Kolad has a 14-kilometre stretch of exciting rapids that take about one and a half hours to complete. Another option is the Ulas River, which has seasonal rafting activities as well as canoeing. Both rivers are located close to Mumbai.
