Cool New Menswear Labels At Harvey Nichols

15th November 2006 Print
McQ at Harvey Nichols It's only right that we stop being chatty and up beat when we write about the venerable Mr Amies. For years the master couturier and his house were home to royalty and socialites galore. This season the House of Amies created some of the most beautiful and elegant tailoring around.

U, handmade in England, are Sandra Lawrence and Dean Webster. They use traditional English fabrics and techniques to create some of the most amazing neck candy (ties) we've seen in a long time. Look out for their experiments with micro checks, stripes and graphics.

McQ – Hurrah, he's turned his hand to menswear too and the Creative One is at it again, this time letting loose his Savile Row taught technical skills on denim. The result: a brand new line for weekend and day that has all the confidence of mainline, and all the wearability of denim.

Y3 - Take the creative genius of Yojhi Yamamoto and times it by the technical largesse of Adidas and you have a street inspired, contemporary label that looks as good on the running track as it does on the dancefloor.

Cockpit is a new collection for men who dare to live their dreams. Inspired and exhilarated by the elegance and power of the Porsche Speedster or the P-51 Mustang, the Cockpit man has an appreciation of the timeless. With styling hints taking a nod from the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy amongst others and using materials such as cashmere, cotton, leather and sheepskin, the collection epitomises the relaxed style of the all American hero.

You don't have to be thin to wear Nerve jeans, but it helps. These Danish masters of slim tailoring make no apologies for creating rock and roll apparel from the best in Italian denim, neither do they ask us to forgive them for paying homage to the Mods. Their slim and narrow lapels, jackets and fine gauge knitwear would do the cast of Quadrophenia proud. Polish your Lambrettas now.

Climb aboard the Neal Simons time machine, as the in-house designer at English American takes us on a journey through time, picking up cultural souvenirs on the way. First stop: a 1960s Brian Wilson in California, think oversized military details. Hold on, we're fast forwarding on to the 1990s and it's the Manchester scene all over again: Nehru jackets, parkas and reefers in the best English wools and cashmeres.

Acne are the Swedish stylists of cool. They have successfully been dressing the fashion pack in denim and separates for the past few seasons, and are replacing Helmut Lang as the cool jean makers to covet.

There's a cliché that does the fashion magazine rounds every Winter. They say in no uncertain terms, that a Winter coat is a 'must' and that if chosen correctly will last you the next ten years. It's the same magazine and generally the same writer, who a year later advises on yet another Winter coat purchase, that again, 'will last you ten years.' Where do these people get off? STOP! And take a look at Moncler. These coats do last and will remain satellite to fashion - never dating, never tiring. Invest now!

Paolo Fumagalli knows his knitwear; it's in his blood. So when he created his own knitwear brand Luna, the industry looked on with interest. He's created some of the best pants, waistcoats and cardigans in the most luxurious fabrics on the menswear market.

What a field day John Varvatos must have had when he signed the contract to design ready-to-wear for Converse. With an archive richer than most, Converse have been cladding the feet of athletes and aesthetes for decades. For Autumn, Varvatos has taken his knowledge of clothing and created a sporty line that references the basketball court and the New York street scene to create letterman cardigans, tees, sweats, fur lined parkas and hoodies to covet.

London cool dude Kim Jones is on the ascent. His quintessentially London take on classic sports brand Umbro has taken the clothes from the terraces to the nightclubs. We're in love, sooo in love with the hoodies and easy cotton tees.
