Autumn holidaymakers can now book cheap hotel accommodation in many popular holiday destinations.

On the Canary Islands the average price for a standard double room is 74 pounds, on the Balearic Islands 77 pounds, on Andalusia 87 pounds, in Peloponnese 83 pounds and on Crete 78 pounds. For overnight accommodation in Sardinia, Brits will pay 94 pounds on average, in Malta 75 pounds and in the Algarve 71 pounds.

Reasonable city breaks

The capital city of Majorca, Palma lures in travellers with average hotel prices at their lowest level this year: A hotel room costs 102 pounds in October. The average price for a double room this time last year was 128 pounds. Further cities that offer cheap accommodation this autumn in comparison to the previous year are Barcelona (115 pounds), Madrid (104 pounds) and Valencia (78 pounds); as well as Naples (90 pounds), Florence (117 pounds), Dublin (101 pounds) and Bucharest (90 pounds).

The most expensive European city in October is Geneva (183 pounds for a double room), closely followed by Venice (182 pounds). The cheapest city to visit is Krakow (64 pounds).

Hotel prices in the United Kingdom are seven percent below the European average

The United Kingdom is currently ranked the 13 most expensive destination in Europe; the average price for a standard double room is 13 percent above the October average (101 pounds). The cheapest average hotel prices can be found in Wales (88 pounds) where the rates have decreased by six percent in comparison to the previous month. Average hotel prices in England and Scotland are 101 pounds in October: In comparison to September 2009, hotel rates have decreased by 13 percent in England and 19 percent in Scotland. In British cities, the largest decrease in hotel prices can be seen in Birmingham (11 percent) followed by Edinburgh (10 percent); hotel prices remain stable in London (136 pounds) where the rates have only increased by one percent in comparison to September 2009.
