NHS Hull launches ‘Fit Fans For Her’

2nd December 2009 Print

Following the success of NHS Hull’s Fit Fans weight management programme aimed at men, the free service is being expanded to meet the needs of the city’s health conscious ladies.

With spaces going fast and available to book now, the initiative is free to women aged between 40-65 years old and involves enrolling onto structured 12-week weight management courses held at Craven Park and selected venues in West Hull.

Starting in January 2010, NHS Hull aims to fill an initial 60 places with sessions running two days a week across all venues.  Participants will be taught how to manage and maintain a healthy weight by following simple exercise and nutritional instructions.

Accessed via the scheme’s city centre ‘Fit Fans Shop’ on King Edward Street – which also offers one-stop advice on the city’s other weight loss services – participants can also enrol by calling a special hotline (01482 22 45 45).

Each programme will be run by professional fitness trainers and integrate exercise into people’s daily routine either at home or outdoors, whilst receiving similar fitness methods used by players at Hull City FC and Hull KR.

Peter Dawson, public health manager for obesity at NHS Hull, said: “The Fit Fans programme, which was originally aimed at men, has been immensely popular with over 350 individuals losing nearly 140 stone between them since we launched in May this year.

“On the back of this success and increased demand we are rolling the campaign out to women living in Hull.  Not only will they be taught simple exercise routines, they’ll be educated on safely removing fat, rather than water, muscle and other tissues.

“With the sessions due to start in January and many people perhaps having overdone their festive celebrations, Fits Fans is the ideal platform to carry out any weight-related New Year resolutions that may have been made.”

Rob Ward, project manager for Fit Fans, added: “By combining simple nutritional advice with a series of walking-based routines, resistance training and core stability work, we want to show how easy it is to lose unwanted weight.

“As well as being informative, the courses are fun and encourage participants to maintain a healthy lifestyle even after the 12-week course has finished.  And, importantly, Fit Fans is a great way of keeping in shape whilst having fun.”

Fit Fans For Women will run from January at selected West Hull venues – 7.30-8.30pm & 8.30-9.30pm (Tuesday) and Craven Park – 7.30-8.30pm & 8.30-9.30pm (Thursday).
