The brand new Larnaka International Airport has officially opened. The new state-of-the art airport, which is three times bigger than its predecessor, will be able to handle up to 7.5 million passengers each year.

Cyprus now boasts two modern airports following the opening of the new airport in Pafos in November 2008.

The €656 million facility represents the island’s biggest infrastructural investment. The new terminal covers an area of 100,000 square metres with features including 67 check-in counters, 16 aircraft walk ways, 11 arrival/departure bus drop-off points and 5,000 square metres of airside retail space.

Bright, modern colours and Cypriot design is featured throughout with a fascia based on Cypriot lace. Passengers can visit the Kypriaka store which offers a wide range of high quality local merchandise such as intricate lace work, silver-plated gifts, art and sculptures, wines, gastronomic specialities and other authentic souvenirs.

His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Demetris Christofias, commented at the inauguration ceremony: “The new airport constitutes a landmark not just in the history of Cypriot tourism but also of the overall development of the country’s infrastructure. With the launching of the new Larnaka Airport we acquire a project for which Cyprus can feel particularly proud.”
