Sailing Turkey’s Gulf of Gulluk

30th December 2009 Print

Specialist operator Journey Anatolia has introduced bareboat and crewed catamaran charters from Bitez in the Gulf of Gulluk for 2010.

Experienced sailors can be independent on a bareboat charter, cruising wherever the winds blow.  On the southern shore of the Gulf are Torba, Turk Buku and Gundogan, playgrounds of Turkey’s rich and famous, while the northern side is for those who really want to escape.

This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with quiet retreats like Iassos guarded by the ruins of a fortress built in the 12th Century or Kazikli with its inky blue waters and sandy beaches.

South of Yalikavak, where the Mediterranean and Aegean seas unite, is the hamlet of Knidos.  Further down the coast is Datca, a bustling holiday village, excellent for a nightlife ‘fix’ and trading experiences with the many sailors who call in.

A week’s bareboat charter of a family catamaran sleeping eight costs from £2,210 in May rising to £2,950 in August.  This includes full tanks of diesel, water and outboard dinghy fuel; gas for cooking, insurance, bed linen and of course assistance/familiarisation at the Bitez base when boarding. Add a skipper to do all the hard work for only £80 per day, plus his/her food (and the loss of one of the single berths on-board).

Journey Anatolia also provides a welcome hamper packed with fresh fruit and vegetables from the local ‘Fruit Heritage Conservation’ scheme, as part of the operator’s commitment to Responsible Tourism.

Flights and transfers are not included. Journey Anatolia’s private, air-conditioned transfers from Bodrum cost £120 (at start and end of the holiday).
