Over 50s wanderlust untouched by recession

The over-50s have become the bedrock of the UK travel industry – one of the sectors hardest hit by the recession – according to research by over-50s insurance provider Staysure.co.uk.

However, it seems there is a real divide between the ‘holiday haves’, who are flush with cash and can jet off on holiday at the drop of a hat, and those ‘holiday have-nots’ who squirrel away money all year.

In a nationwide poll only 3 per cent of those questioned by Staysure.co.uk were not taking a break due to the economic conditions. Equally, nearly 40 per cent of respondents did not need to save at all for their main holiday, whereas around a third saved up throughout the year.

Older people tend to have more disposable income and more time to take holidays – particularly at the last minute – and have taken advantage of price cuts to get away”

We are attracting thousands of new customers every week who are desperate to get away but have been held back because they couldn’t find appropriate cover.”
