Sunny Cyprus to host solar vehicle race

25th March 2010 Print

Cyprus is one of the sunniest spots in the Mediterranean with the longest summer, making it the perfect location for all things solar powered. This year, for the first time ever, they will be hosting The Cyprus Institute Solar Car Challenge.

The race is due to take place on 19 June 2010 and will challenge teams to design, build and race their own solar vehicles.

The first race of its kind in Cyprus encourages both local and international teams to take part, already confirmed to participate is the Swiss team, Swissprit, who have already broken nine world records and won two world challenges in this field. The CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research solar team will also be exhibiting their vehicle which was constructed 20 years ago, showing just how far technology in this area has progressed.

Visitors will be guaranteed all the thrill of the races and a feast for their imagination as seeing these unusual vehicles pull away from the starting line is a moment not to be missed. Budding engineers can take part in their very own solar version of scrap heap challenge and enter the ‘open category’ where anyone can take part and build their own solar powered vehicle. So whether you are a participant or a spectator, this unusual event provides the perfect excuse for a sunshine break.
